Waverace 64 - Nintendo 64, 20/5/97
As the first racer on the N64, Waverace had a lot to do. Firstly, after the relatively sedate Mario 64 and Pilotwings, it had to prove it could really shift polygons.
Secondly, and most importantly, it needed to prove that the analogue control stick wasn't just a gimmick.
By having a jetski game as the first N64 racer, Nintendo has proved that analogue control can enhance the gaming experience significantly. Without it, Waverace would be markedly different.
Speeding around Waverace's waterlogged courses on your jetski is a mind-altering experience.
Though the pace of the game really gives you to time to admire the luscious, sublime graphics, such as the dolphins and fish, and the glorious, rolling, transparent water, you'll continually feel the effect of the bobbing waves.
It's the closest you'll get to a real jetski without sitting on a big bit of polystyrene in your bath.
The N64 controller is the key to Waverace's success. The analogue stick lets you lean into corners, spin your ski around and hit big waves face on.
We can't think of a game that has offered more precise control over the on-screen action. Indeed, Waverace probably makes better use of the N64's control stick than Mario 64.
Forget Ridge Racer. Forget Sega Rally. Waverace is the best racing game on console. And it's the first two-player N64 game. Oh yes, mamma!
